Teams from Narativ and Listening Booth Media joined recently the teachers and students of Manhattan International School to celebrate the launch of Season One of What’s Happening Here?
Season One of the What’s Happening Here podcast focuses on the experience of teenagers living as immigrants in the United States as they excavate and craft stories for their college applications. What do these young voices have to tell us about the enduring strength and potential of “the American experiment”?
Season One takes place at Manhattan International High School. Founded in 1993 and located on the Upper East Side, MIHS, is a part of The International Network for Public Schools. The 330 students from over 50 different countries who attend the school all speak English as a second language and have lived in the United States for less than four years.
Host Katie Shepherd follows nine students from the 2016 class through the process of developing their personal essays as speeches to share on “Speech Day” in front of the entire student body at the end of the semester. Teachers, Ms. Susan and Ms. Cinzia, patiently and expertly overcome language and cultural barriers to elicit these rich first person narratives. Each episode chronicles the evolution of a different student’s story within the classroom experience.
