Narativ develops intergenerational Storytelling Workshop for CUNY Middle Grades Initiative at Henry Street School (March 15, 2010)

Global storytelling company Narativ Inc. collaborated with CUNY’s Middle Grades Initiative (MGI) to foster community building and self-advocacy through personal storytelling in a new 3-workshop program at the Henry Street School for International Studies on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.

The new program brought together six high school students, two of their teachers, and three Narativ trainers for three Saturday workshops. Each workshop focused on telling a different type of personal: stories about people who have influenced you; stories about moments of personal discovery; and stories about people and places in your everyday life.

Narativ founder Murray Nossel, PhD explains, “Our goal was to encourage students to connect with one another and their community through the timeless art of storytelling. Their stories were unique and powerful, and working side-by-side with their teachers created a strong synergy with their classroom work, extending the learning in between the weekly workshops.”

Narativ partners with College Now and Macaulay Honors College to pilot College Essay Writing Workshops  (August 2009)

Working with College Now and Macaulay Honors College at The City University of New York, Narativ Inc. piloted a new program for high school students. The program is designed to help students find their own unique stories and to shape those stories into powerful and authentic college admissions essays.

College Now and Macaulay Honors College helped Narativ to identify students who would benefit from the program, and the program was held at Macaulay Honors College.

According to Carol Barash, Director of Narativ’s Educational Division, “I had been helping students with their college admission essays for years, and was looking for a way to help kids unearth deeper, more meaningful stories. There was a logical fit with the Narativ methodology, which allows people to find and tell their own unique stories. Every student has his or her own story to tell. The Narativ methodology helps young people find those stories and tell them in their own voice.”
